Due to producer interest, the NC State University Soybean Extension Program is again researching the value of foliar fertilizers for increasing soybean yields. In 2019 we participated in a study with 13 States across the US for a total of 20 sites.

I. Steps to Make Soybean Water

  • Soybeans: Use fresh, mold-free soybeans. The quantity depends on your needs.
  • Water: Enough to soak and boil the soybeans (2–3 times the volume of soybeans).
  • Container: A clean, sealable container (e.g., plastic bucket or glass jar) for storing the soybean water.

2. Soak the Soybeans

  • Place soybeans in a container and cover them completely with water.
  • Soak for 4–6 hours. Adjust time based on temperature and preference.

3. Boil the Soybean Water

  • Pour the soaked soybeans and water into a pot and bring to a boil over high heat.
  • Reduce heat and simmer until soybeans are soft. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Cook until soybeans are fully tender but not overly mushy, as this may affect fermentation later.

4. Strain the Soybean Water

  • Let the mixture cool, then strain through a fine mesh or cheesecloth to remove soybean residue.
  • Ensure the liquid is clear and free of solids.

5. Ferment the Soybean Water (Optional)

  • For stronger effects, add sugar or yeast to the strained liquid to aid fermentation.
  • Transfer the liquid to a clean container, seal, and leave in a well-ventilated area.
  • Ferment for about one week. Open the container regularly to ventilate and avoid odors.

6. Dilute the Soybean Water

  • Dilute the fermented soybean water at a ratio of 1:10 (1 liter of soybean water + 10 liters of water).
  • Diluted soybean water is safer for foliar spraying, as high concentrations may damage plants.

II. How to Use Soybean Water as Foliar Fertilizer

1. Choose Suitable Plants

  • Most vegetables and fruit trees benefit from soybean water. Select plants based on species and growth stage.

2. Apply Soybean Water

  • Spray diluted soybean water every 7–10 days during the plant’s active growth phase. Avoid over-spraying to prevent waterlogging.
  • Apply evenly to the undersides of leaves. Avoid spraying during sun exposure to prevent leaf scorching.

3. Monitor Plant Response

  • Observe plants after application. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur (e.g., wilting, yellowing).
  • For sensitive plants, test on a small area first.

4. Precautions

  • Avoid overuse, as excessive fertilization may harm plants.
  • If leaves burn or yellow, dilute the solution further or adjust application frequency.
